Bio: The IKON of West End John Contoudios
John started refereeing in 1980 doing only the senior teams. Games he refereed were State League, xxxx Premier League, Div 1 with football Brisbane, Coca Coala Cup & Ampol Cup.
John Refereed in places like Bundaberg, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.
He was a Centre Forward Striker and played for Olympic at the age of 26 and stayed with them for three years. In those days they used to train at Kangaroo Point. John then joined forces with a Hungarian team in the Gap and played there also for the following 3 years.
Back at his home country he played as a Goal Keeper in Giannadi Rhodes Greece in a 3rd Division team.
Why did John Choose to Referee. He always wanted to Referee from a young age. When John migrated to Australia he tried to Referee in 1968 even to the extent of applying and attending the course, but due to his limited English was unable to qualify at that stage.
One of John’s memorable matches was Brisbane vs Rockhampton played at the Suncorp Stadium he refereed the curtain raiser before Iraklis (Greek Team from Greece) vs Australia.
During John’s long journey as a referee he’s said the main change in the rules over the years was that the Keeper could pick the ball up from a back pass now you carn’t.
John has also refereed Futsal games for the last 10 years and is still one of the log standing referees in west end.
